However, this is not a service to request duplicates of birth or marriage certificates of living persons. The Vital Records site can give you information on how to obtain these in all fifty states and in several other countries.

If you have an item that you would like to see returned to its original family, click on Submit an Item on the left side of the screen.

This is not a service to find missing persons or lost friends.

Also, requests for "anything about" a particular surname are allowed, but generally do not get much response.

We certainly hope that someone sees your request and contacts you with good news! Please be careful, though. It would be easy for someone to see your request and say "Yes, I have your long-lost family bible. Just send a money order for $50 and I'll mail it to you." even though they don't have the item at all! We've all heard stories about similar scams involving "Lost Dog" ads.
