This is a military canteen that belonged to a volunteer in the Spanish American War. It is leather bound and hand-painted by the ownwr. On one side is the image of an Eagle with a USA flag in its talons.The reverse side has the year 1898 painted in the center with the words Ironton, Ohio in an arc at the bottom, and the name of the owner Frank H. Shaw in an arc across the top. I am guessing at the last name as this side of the canteen evidently rubbed against the soldiers body until the last name is really no longer readable. A doctor friend of mine said ultra-violet light could bring out the name. I have left a message on the ironton, OH web page, but no response. Would like to return to descendant of soldier. I have had canteen for almost 50 years. Still has original cork.
